Bay City | Bay City, MI

The Team: Bay City, with a population of over 32,000 people, is located in east-central Michigan on the Saginaw River, near the river’s outlet to Saginaw Bay within Lake Huron.

NextCycle Michigan Project:  Due to the closure of the municipal compost site in 2019, the city collects and hauls yard waste to a privately owned compost facility in Saginaw, adding 20 round-trip miles per load. Currently, the city’s residents have access to a food scrap pickup service and drop-off center, however, both are underutilized. This team seeks to understand the need and feasibility of a large composting operation using a public-private partnership model. During the NextCycle Michigan program, the team will work with coaches to evaluate data, identify ideal site options, understand intergovernmental agreements, research organics markets, outline community education and engagement, and identify funding pathways. This project will divert materials from landfills, create jobs, and provide greater access to food scrap diversion programs including to economically disadvantaged residents.
