City of Detroit | Detroit, MI
The Team: The city of Detroit is leading a collaborative initiative — the Detroit Decentralized Composting Network — in partnership with Sanctuary Farms. The team will include sustainability and urban agriculture representatives from the city government, as well as representatives from Sanctuary Farms where they are transforming food waste into nutrient-rich compost and growing organic produce for Detroit's lower eastside. Both entities participated separately in a previous NextCycle Michigan cohort.
NextCycle Michigan Project: The Detroit Decentralized Composting Network aims to improve food waste management in the city by scaling and streamlining food waste reduction and recovery at both new and existing industrial-scale composting sites. In turn, this project can serve as a replicable model for food waste diversion in other urban areas. During the NextCycle Michigan program, the team will refine its operational plan, connect with project partners and feedstock sources, determine the ideal site for project placement, and identify funding pathways.
