Iosco County & Partners | Iosco County, MI

The Team: Iosco County, boasting a population of over 25,000, is in the northern part of Michigan’s lower peninsula bordering Lake Huron. This team is a collaboration of several partners including Iosco County, Oscoda Area Schools, Develop Iosco, Plainfield Township, Charter Township of Oscoda, Township of Burleigh, Township of Baldwin, Alpena’s Northeast Michigan Materials Management Authority (NMMMA), City of East Tawas, and Neiman’s Family Markets.

NextCycle Michigan Project: A survey conducted in the Fall of 2022 indicated that over 50% of residents do not recycle with most citing not having recycling offered or not knowing how to recycle. The team is seeking to implement three strategically located drop-off sites, creating improved access to recycling for paper, cardboard, plastic containers, and glass. During NextCycle Michigan, the team will work with coaches to establish intergovernmental agreements, identify end markets, pursue contracting for services, create community education, and develop methods for tracking data. This project will divert materials from landfills, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and expand recycling access to rural and underserved communities.
