Establishing a Michigan lab facility to test and certify the compostability of paper and plastic food service and other products

Western Michigan University’s compostability lab is in the process of tuning equipment, conducting reference tests, and becoming certified. The certification process by BPI should be complete by mid-year 2022 and the project team is hoping to test their first commercial product by the third quarter of 2022. During the NextCycle Michigan program, the team completed market research, improved its value proposition, and clarified its future needs. The team also connected with EGLE and local businesses that could be potential partners. The WMU team is continuing work on its cost structure and looking to generate revenue in the next phase of the project.
