Royal Oak & Partners | Royal Oak, MI
The Team: The city of Royal Oak is located approximately 14 miles north of downtown Detroit in Oakland County and boasts a population of over 58,000 people. The city is collaborating with several organizations including Make Food Not Waste, Metro Food Rescue, C.O. Sustainability, My Green Michigan, Midtown Composters, Royal Oak Farmers Market, Rat Haters Guide, and Walking Lightly.
NextCycle Michigan Project: The team conducted a three-month pilot program in February 2024 – May 2024 with the goal to reduce food waste. The program included a free residential food waste drop-off site at the Royal Oak Farmers Market, provided educational workshops to residents and businesses with peer-to-peer learning and collaboration, and drew on several local businesses and organizations to assist in re-envisioning sustainable materials management in high-density business districts. During NextCycle Michigan, the team will work with coaches to analyze data from the pilot, create shareable reports, connect with potential partners, and identify and prepare for funding opportunities that will support more comprehensive food waste reduction and recycling solutions. This project will divert materials from landfills, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, create jobs.
