Holland, Ottawa County, Hope college | Holland, MI

The Team: The team is led by the City of Holland, located in Southwest Michigan on the shores of Lake Michigan with a population of over 34,000. Collaborative partners include Ottawa County (pop. 300,000+), Holland Board of Public Works, and Hope College (3,300+ enrolled students).

NextCycle Michigan Project: The City of Holland seeks to pivot a previous program, Project Pride, from a program that allowed residents to bring a truckload of dumpster material to be landfilled, to a program that emphasizes material recovery, increases access to recycling, and provides a service for hard-to-recycle items. The center will be available for residents of Holland, Ottawa County and Allegan County, and will include robust educational opportunities explaining how to properly and actively participate in recycling. Operational costs will be covered by commodity sales, drop-off fees, and annual membership fees. During the NextCycle Michigan program, the team will work with coaches to understand regulatory and permitting issues, refine the business plan, identify funding pathways to build the site, and connect with potential partners. This project will divert materials from landfills, increase access to recycling, create a recovery pathway for hard-to-recycle items, and create jobs.
